(Translation) Cirno,Q? || 凋叶棕

This song appears to deal with Kant’s four questions:

1) What can I know?
2) What should I do?
3) What may I hope?
4) What is Man?

I love philosophy.

tsuki no yoru.
shizukesa to.
sono kurasa ni.
mi o makase.

A moonlit night.
And serenity.
To that darkness.
I trust my body.

hitori kiri hiza o kakae.
sotto toikakeru.

Lonely I crouch.
Cautiously I ask.

jibun to iu inochi no koto
jibun to iu sonzai no koto

About the life of “oneself”.
About the being of “oneself”.

umarete shinda naraba
doko ni iku no darou?

If we are born and die,
where should we go?

hito no you ni…?
arui wa betsu no…?

Where mankind goes…?
Or perhaps somewhere else…?

tada hitori de kangaete itai kotae ga denakute mo
sore wa nan no houga ka

I want to ponder on my own, even if I can’t come up with an answer.
What kind of offspring is that?

itsushika koko ni umarete ita
onore to iu mono o furikaeru no nara

We were suddenly born into this place.
When our kind looks back…

itsushika koko ni gimon o mochi
shisaku ni shizumi iku sono fukasa dake
nanika o fumihazusu no ka

…surprisingly, we hold doubts here.
We only sink into the depths of speculations.
Will something throw us off the trail?

“この”外側へ…?

“kono” sotogawa e…?

Towards “this” outside…?(*1)

jibun to.
jibun igai.
jibun wa.
nanimono ka.

Me, and.
Others.
We are.
Who?

nani ga issho de. nani ga chigau ka.
sore ga taisetsu ka.

What is the same? What is different?
Is that important?

jibun to iu sonzai ga
hoka no mina to chigau no nara

If the being of “oneself”
was different from other creatures

sou aru beku ikiru to shite
nani o suru beki darou?

…then, in order to live
what are we ought to do?(*2)

hito no you ni…?
arui wa betsu no…?

What mankind does…?
Or perhaps something else…?

hakuhyou no ue o wataru you na fuantei na jimonjitou
sono ayausa ni ryouashi o funde “touken” o susumeru nara
tsutanai sono ashidori demo

Like wandering on top of thin ice we insecurely soliloquize.
We set food at dangerous territory and want to advance with “philosophy”(*3),
but that gait is clumsy.

itsushika koko de shikou o eta
onore to iu mono ni omoi haseru nara

Unexpectedly we obtained a consideration here.
If we think hard about our kind…

itsushika sore ni gimon o mochi
arata ni toi naosu sono oosa dake
nanika ga kawatte iku no ka

…surprisingly, we hold doubts in that.
There’s only a great number of questions re-asked for the new.
Will something change?

――kore ijou saki ni fumiitte wa ikenai.

――In that case, we cannot advance.

We tremble when sensing an omen that could resemble an unspoken premonition.

sore wa onore no uchi ni miidashita arata naru kanousei ka?

Is that a retrieved possibility we discovered within ourselves?

junkan shi
tamotsu douitsusei
tooei sareta
shizen no sono sugata
sorera no soto e ―――sotogawa e to.
jibun to iu mono no sonzai igi o
toikake tsuzukeru koto de…

Circulating, or
retaining an identity
Projection(*4) of
that figure’s nature
To those side ―――to the outside.
When continuing to question
the meaning of our existence…

itsushika koko ni genshou shita
onore to iu mono o teigi suru no nara

…suddenly, we discovered phenomenons here.
If we would define our kind…

itsushika subete ni gimon o mochi
sono imi o miidasu sono omosa dake
nanika o motomete iku no ka

…unexpectedly, we hold doubts in everything.
There’s only the weight of discovering the meaning of it.
Will we seek for something?

“その”外側へ…?

“sono” sotogawa e…?

Going to “that” outside…?(*5)

(*1) ´´ Towards “this” outside…? ´´ Because of the ´´この´´ (object near the speaker) I was thinking that maybe this line talks about the things we surely know about.
(*2) ´´What are we ought to do?´´ is Kant’s 2nd question.

(*3) 哲学 (“tetsugako” [Philosophy]) is sung as “touken”. I thought about “倒懸” (“touken” [Hanging upside down]) here, since in philosophy you often turn everything mankind believes in around and questions it.

(*4) 投影 (“tooei” [Projection]) defines an act of “subconsciously denying his or her own attributes, thoughts, and emotions, which are then ascribed to the outside world, usually to other people”.

(*5) ´´ Going to “that” outside…?´´ Same as in (*1), only reversed. ´´その´´ indicates something near the listener, so I figured this line talks about things we don’t surely know about, but the “others” do.
